FDR MEMORIAL

Ohio Drive NW
Washington 20242
202/426-6841

The FDR Memorial is a 7.5-acre site dedicated to the 32nd president. A short walk from the Jefferson Memorial, the FDR Memorial features waterfalls, sculptures and an outdoor gallery.

Located between the Tidal Basin and the Potomac, the FDR Memorial is mostly comprised of huge red-granite walls that form open –air rooms. On the walls are some of FDR’s famous quotes from the Great Depression and New Deal such as, " The only thing we have to fear is fear itself".

Ten bronze sculptures and bas-reliefs depict FDR, wife Eleanor and images from FDR’s four terms as president. The park also has waterfalls, reflecting pools and plenty of shady spots to sit. There is also gift shop that features books on FDR and his presidency.

Unveiled in May 1997, the FDR Memorial is one of Washington’s newest monuments. Upon opening, the memorial received mixed reviews for several reasons. One observation is that FDR wanted his memorial to be simple and understated, but huge granite walls on 7.5 acres precludes that possibility. Another objection is that FDR is not depicted in his wheelchair or with his jauntily angled cigarette.

The FDR Memorial is a nice place to sit and rest if you are touring the monuments on foot. If you decide to take the Tourmobile tours of D.C., the next stop on the tour is a junction where you can switch busses to see Arlington or other attractions. Therefore, don’t spend too much time resting here, there are places to rest and get refreshments at the junction.

This is a nice spot to sit a get off your feet for a couple of minutes, and certainly shouldn't be missed if you're going to the Jefferson Memorial. On summer days the FDR Memorial can be peaceful and inspiring, but during inclement weather it can get unpleasant because the open air galleries don't provide much shelter. Check the weather forecast before you plan to go. There are refreshments and benches toward the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, so don't spend too much time resting here.
