The Jefferson Memorial is
dedicated to Thomas Jefferson, the third President and primary
author of the Declaration of Independence. Overlooking the Tidal
Basin, the Jefferson Memorial is a ten-minute walk from the
Lincoln Memorial.
The
Jefferson Memorial is dedicated to Thomas Jefferson, called the
1-2-3 President because he was the first Secretary of State, the
second-vice President and the third President. Besides these
accomplishments, he was the main author of the Declaration of
Independence and an accomplished architect. He designed the
rotundas of the Univ. of Virginia and his mansion Monticello
after the Pantheon in Rome, so it is only befitting that his own
memorial is built in the same style.
John Russell Pope designed
a monument with colonnade and dome around a 19-foot statue of
Jefferson. Excerpts from Jefferson’s writings are inscribed on
the walls.
In clement weather, a good
way to see the monument is by renting a paddle-boat from the
Tidal Basin’s Boat House.
The Jefferson Memorial is a beautiful tribute to Thomas
Jefferson.
A good tip is to rent a
paddleboat from the Tidal Basin's Boathouse. On a nice day, the
paddleboats offer a unique view and it is not hard to stay
completely dry.
An evening stroll by the
memorial can be quite romantic.
